Antelao GeoIP
Antelao GeoIP answers where an address is, and keeps its MaxMind GeoLite2 databases up to date itself. It ships as two images: the API, and an optional console.
It answers questions and decides nothing
GeoIP knows nothing about access rules. Which countries a caller admits is that caller's policy. This service is asked where an address is and says so; it never refuses anybody, and it has no opinion about what the answer means.
That separation is why a lapsed license here cannot switch anybody's enforcement off. The products that depend on it enforce their own rules, and a geolocation service that stopped answering would take their enforcement down with it.
Where you will meet it
One GeoIP service can answer every program on your network that needs to place an address, so the GeoLite2 databases are downloaded and kept current in one place. You will meet it in two ways:
- Inside the Odoo Host Manager, as the
ohm-geoipcontainer, which is what the firewall's country and continent rules are matched against, licensed by the manager's own license. Its manual says how the rules use this service, and what happens here when that license stops carrying IP location data: see Related below. - On its own, as a service you run and call.
What it answers
- Country and continent for an address
- Everything the databases hold - ASN, city, network, coordinates
- Batches, addresses and host names mixed
- The
.mmdbfile itself, so a caller can mirror it and stop asking one address at a time
Every one of these answers whether or not the service is licensed. What a license buys is real data: unlicensed, the answers are a recognisable placeholder. See Licensing.
Without a MaxMind account
The service runs. It reports itself unavailable on /status and answers every lookup unknown -
it never refuses a caller because it cannot place them.
Add the credential later, in the console or through the API. See Databases and credentials.
Where to start
Install it, then reach the console. When something does not work, start at Troubleshooting.
